24.09.10 My War Against Mosquitoes

When my eldest daughter was five years old, she was so thin and weak that she frequently fell ill.

첫째 딸은 다섯 살 때 워낙 마르고 약해서 잔병치레를 많이 했던 아이라,

I was constantly worried.

걱정이 많았다.

One summer night, I put her to sleep inside a mosquito net, but she still got about ten mosquito bites on her feet alone.

어느 여름밤, 모기장 안에서 잠을 재웠는데도 발에만 열 군데 정도 모기에 물렸다.

A mosquito had managed to get inside the net even though I had turned on a mosquito repellent.

모기약을 켜 놓았음에도 불구하고, 모기 한 마리가 모기장 안으로 들어와 았었던 것이다.

My daughter’s feet started to swell up.

아이의 발이 퉁퉁 부어오르기 시작했다.

Her breathing and heartbeat became irregular, and she wouldn’t wake up when I tried to rouse her.

아이의 호흡과 심장 박동이 불규칙해졌고, 내가 깨워도 잘 일어나지 못했다.

* try to rouse someone ​: ~를 깨우려고 하다

I was so scared that I took her to the ER.

나는 너무 놀라서 아이를 응급실에 데리고 갔다.

Fortunately, her breathing stabilized on the way, and she woke up during the examination.

다행히 가는 중에 호흡이 안정되었고, 진료를 보는 동안에 잠도 깼다.

However, the doctor said that even a mosquito bite could require a procedure if the inflammation is severe.

하지만 의사 선생님이 모기에 물려도 염증이 심하면 시술이 필요할 수도 있다고 하셔서,

* inflammation is severe ​: 염증이 심하다

​

That really gave me a scare.

너무 무섭고 두려웠다.

* give someone a scare ​: ~에게 겁을 주다, ~를 두렵게 하다

​

Since then, I’ve made it a habit to deal with any mosquito that gets into the house before I go to bed.

그 이후로는 집에 모기 한 마리만 들어와도 꼭 처리하고 자야 하는 버릇이 생겼다.

* go to bed ​: 잠자리에 들다

​

Sadly, I must kill any mosquito I come across.

나에게 모기는 보이면 꼭 죽여야 하는 슬픈 인연이다.
