24.08.22 Our Dog, Champ

We live with a companion animal, a poodle named “Champ.”

우리는 ‘챔프’라는 이름의 반려견 푸들 한 마리와 함께 살고 있다.

We brought him home as a little puppy in 2013 after my daughter took her college entrance exam.

2013년 딸이 대학 수학 능력 시험을 치고 난 후에, 어린 강아지를 집으로 데리고 왔다.

My wife was very upset at first because the puppy wasn’t housebroken and would relieve himself anywhere in the house.

처음에 아내는 강아지가 대소변을 가리지 못하고, 집 안 아무 데나 볼일을 봐서 몹시 속상해했다.

But now she has grown very attached to Champ and does all the chores needed to raise him.

그런데 지금은 챔프와 정이 많이 들어서, 챔프를 키우며 해야 하는 일들은 아내가 도맡아서 하고 있다.

My daughter, on the other hand, only occasionally dotes on the pup when she gets home.

반면 딸은 가끔씩 집에 오면 강아지를 예뻐해 주는 정도이다.

I had a traumatic experience related to dogs when I was young,

나는 어릴 적에 강아지에 대한 트라우마가 있었다.

I witnessed our family dog accidentally eat rat poison and pass away, which left a lasting impression on me.

집에서 키우던 강아지가 쥐약을 잘못 먹고 저세상으로 가는 장면을 목격했고, 그 충격이 오랫동안 지속되었다.

However, now I adore our Champ more than anyone.

하지만 지금은 누구보다도 우리 챔프를 예뻐한다.

Seeing him go wild with excitement when I come home has helped me overcome my trauma.

내가 귀가하면 난리를 치며 반기는 모습을 보면서, 트라우마를 극복할 수 있게 되었다.

Champ is getting on in years now.

이제 우리 챔프는 나이가 많이 들었다.

He suffers from a heart condition, so he needs regular visits to the vet.

The medical bills are expensive, but the whole family chips in every month to cover the costs and take care of him.

병원비가 많이 들고 있지만, 온 가족이 매월 회비를 조금씩 내서 비용을 부담하며 돌보고 있다.
