24.08.26 Apology Day

My fourth-grade daughter goes to school with her bestie every day.

초등학교 4학년인 우리 딸은 매일 단짝 친구와 같이 통학을 합니다.

But one day, she told me that she had been in an argument with this friend.

그런데 어느 날 딸이 그 친구와 싸웠다고 하더군요.

As a result, they started going to school separately, and my daughter seemed to be in a gloomy mood.

그래서 학교도 따로 가고 딸아이의 기분도 우울해 보였습니다.

I didn’t think much of it at first, believing they would soon make up.

저는 둘이 곧 화해할 거라고 생각하며 처음에는 대수롭지 않게 여겼습니다.

However, as other friends got involved between them, the situation seemed to get worse by the day.

하지만 둘 사이에 다른 친구들까지 끼어들면서, 날이 갈수록 사태가 점점 심각해지는 것 같았습니다.

When the issue didn’t resolve itself over time, I met with the friend’s mother for a heart-to-heart.

시간이 흘러도 문제가 해결이 되지 않아서, 저는 결국 그 친구의 엄마를 만나서 깊은 대화를 나누었습니다.

A few days later, it was October 24, which is known as “Apple Day.” It’s a play on words in Korean, meaning two people can apologize to each other.

며칠이 지나고, 마침 10월 24일, 둘(2)이서 서로 사(4)과 하는 날‘인 ’사과의 날 (Apple Day)’이 되었습니다.

* apologize to each other : 서로 사과하다

To mark this day, the children’s teacher organized a campaign where students apologized for things they were sorry for.

이날을 기념해서, 아이들의 선생님은 그동안 미안했던 일을 사과하는 캠페인을 진행해 주셨습니다.

* things one is sorry for : 미안하게 생각하는 일

In the end, my daughter and her friend apologized to each other, hugged, and made up.

결국 딸은 친구와 서로 사과하고, 안아 주며 화해를 했습니다.

I feel that my daughter has grown a lot through this process.

이런 과정을 겪으면서 아이가 많이 성장했다는 생각이 들었습니다.
