24.08.29 Meeting a Compatriot at Frankfurt Airport

A few years ago, I had to transfer to a flight to Stockholm at an airport in Frankfurt.

수년 전, 저는 프랑크푸르트 공항에서 스톡홀름으로 가는 비행기를 갈아타야 할 일이 있었습니다.

I needed to find Lufthansa Airlines to check in for my flight, but Frankfurt Airport was so huge that I couldn’t find my way.

탑승 수속을 하기 위해 루프트한자 항공사를 찾아야 하는데, 프랑크푸르트 공항이 너무 넓어서 찾기가 힘들었습니다.

I tried asking for directions at the information desk with my limited English, but I couldn’t make sense of the English spoken by the staff.

부족한 영어 실력으로 안내 데스크에 길을 물어보았지만, 안내원이 하는 영어는 전혀 알아들을 수가 없었습니다.

I eventually found my way to the airline after circling the airport a few times, but all the counters were closed.

다시 공항을 몇 바퀴 돌다가 결국 그 항공사를 찾긴 찾았는데 창구가 모두 닫혀 있었습니다.

I was worried, thinking “Oh no, I’ve become an international missing person,” when I suddenly heard someone saying “So long” in Korean from a boarding gate in the distance.

“이제 어떡하지, 국제 미아가 됐구나”하고 걱정하고 있는데, 갑자기 저 멀리 탑승 게이트에서 “잘 가”하는 우리나라 말이 제 귀를 뚫고 들어왔습니다.

* missing person : 미아, 실종자

* so long : 잘 가

* in the distance : 먼 곳에

I ran over and explained my situation, and they kindly took me to an open airline desk.

순식간에 달려가서 사정을 설명하니, 친절하게 열려 있는 항공사 데스크까지 저를 데려다주었습니다.

Even now, when I think about that time, I feel proud of the Korean people living all around the world.

지금도 그때를 생각하면 세계 곳곳에 살고 있는 우리나라 사람들에 대해 가슴이 뿌듯해집니다.
