24.09.05 Driving Practice

​I got my driver’s license a few years ago, but I was too scared to drive on the highway.

저는 몇 년 전에 운전면허를 땄지만, 고속 도로에서 운전하기가 너무 무서웠습니다.

* get one’s driver’s license : 운전면허를 따다

* be too scared to : 너무 무서워서 ~하지 못하다

So, I haven’t actually driven for the past seven years.

그래서 그 이후로 7년 동안 운전을 하지 않았습니다.

But I made up my mind that I needed to start driving again, so I took a 10-hour driving course.

하지만 다시 운전을 해야겠다는 마음을 먹고, 운전 연수를 10시간 받았습니다.

* make up one’s mind : 마음을 먹다, 결정하다

* take a 10-hour driving course : 10시간의 운전 연수를 받다

However, that wasn’t enough, so I am practicing some more with my husband.

그러나 그 정도로는 부족해서 남편과 추가로 운전 연습을 하고 있습니다.

* practice some more : 좀 더 연습하다

My husband teaches me patiently at first, without getting angry.

남편은 처음에는 화를 내지 않고 참을성 있게 잘 가르쳐 줍니다.

* without getting angry : 화내지 않고

​

But eventually, he gets frustrated and starts raising his voice.

그러다가 결국에는 답답해하며 큰소리를 냅니다.

* raise one’s voice : 언성을 높이다

​

He mainly points out two things : first, look far ahead; second, don’t grip the steering wheel too tightly.

남편이 주로 지적하는 것은 딱 두 가지입니다. 첫째, 멀리 보라. 둘째, 핸들을 너무 꽉 잡지 말아라.

* mainly point out : 주로 강조하다

* look far ahead : 멀리 보다

* grip the steering wheel : 핸들을 잡다

But I struggle with both.

그런데 저는 둘 다 잘 안됩니다.

The car wobbles when I try to stay in my lane.

차선을 맞추다 보면 차가 이리저리 흔들리고,.

* stay in one’s lane : 차선을 유지하다

​

Especially on the highway, I still can’t judge how much to turn the steering wheel.

특히 고속 도로에서는 핸들을 얼마나 틀어야 할지 아직 감이 없습니다.

* judge how much to : 얼마나 ~할지 가늠하다[판단하다]​

I’ve scheduled another round of driving practice with my husband today.

오늘도 남편과 또 한 번 운전 연습을 하기로 했습니다.

* another round of : 또 한 번의

​
