24.09.23 An Incident with Neighbors

Not long after we moved into our current apartment, our downstairs neighbor knocked on our door.

지금 살고 있는 아파트로 이사 온 지 얼마 되지 않아 아래층에 사는 사람이 우리 집 문을 두드렸다.

He asked if we could keep it down at night since they had a high school senior in their family.

I sincerely apologized and gave my kids a stern talking-to. We’ve gotten along fine since then.

정말 죄송하다고 말한 후에 아이들에게 단단히 주의를 주었고, 그 이후에는 별 문제없이 잘 지냈다.

However, a new family moved into the apartment above us.

밤까지 쿵쾅거리는 발자국 소리에 괴로워하던 남편이 시끄럽다고 얘기하기 위해 올라갔다.

The man upstairs retorted that it’s only normal for houses with kids to be noisy, which set off an argument.

그러나 윗집 아저씨가 아이들이 있는 집이 시끄럽기 마련이지 하면서 시비가 붙었다.

Voices were raised, and both the neighbor’s wife and I had to step in to calm our husbands down.

큰소리가 오가고, 나와 윗집 아주머니가 각자의 남편을 진정시켜 싸움을 말려야 했다.

After that, we didn’t interact with them.

그 이후로 우리는 서로 왕래하지 않았다.

A short while later, our child and the child living upstairs ended up in the same class and became the class president and vice-president.

그런데 얼마 지나지 않아, 우리 집 아이와 윗집 아이가 같은 반이 되고 반장, 부반장이 되어 학교 행사를 같이 하게 되었다.

They had to work together on school events. We moms started talking and exchanging greetings again.

엄마들끼리는 다시 얘기를 나누고 서로 인사를 주고받으며 지내게 되었다.

But the fathers still continue to ignore each other.
