24.09.19 Living Alone for the First Time

Sometimes, I find myself thinking about my days living in a dorm as a student.

문득 나의 학창 시절 기숙사 생활이 떠오를 때가 있다.

I got accepted into a university far from home, and it was my first time living apart from my parents.

나는 타지에 있는 대학교에 합격하면서 부모님과 처음으로 떨어져 살게 되었다.

Some kids arrived at the dorm with their parents’ cars packed with belongings.

일부 아이들은 부모님의 자가용으로 짐을 한가득 실어 기숙사에 왔다.

But I traveled by bus with my mom, and all I had were some daily necessities and three sets of clothes.

그러나 나는 엄마와 버스를 타고 이동했고, 나의 짐은 생필품 몇 개와 세 벌의 옷이 전부였다.

When I arrived at the dorm for the first time, I was over the moon to have some space to myself.

처음 기숙사에 왔을 때 나만의 공간이 생기고,

I had my own bed, and most importantly, plenty of hot water for showers.

침대도 있고, 무엇보다 샤워할 때 뜨거운 물이 충분히 나와서 너무 행복했다.

Meanwhile, my mom told me she spent days crying her eyes out after leaving me at the dorm.

반면에 엄마는 나를 기숙사에 두고 오고 나서 몇 날 며칠을 눈물로 보냈다고 하셨다.

* cry one’s eyes out : 펑펑 울다

​

I only heard about this after I graduated from college.

나는 그 이야기를 대학교 졸업하고 나서야 듣게 되었다.

* graduate from college : 대학을 졸업하다

​

Looking back, I think children grow up to be more resilient than their parents expect.

돌이켜 보면, 자식은 부모의 생각보다 더 씩씩하게 자라는 존재가 아닐까 싶다

* grow up to be : ~로 자라다.
