24.10.11 Wildlife Traffic Accident

I’m a listener who recently moved to Gangwon-do province because of my job.
저는 직장 때문에 최근에 강원도로 이사 오게 된 청취자입니다.

To celebrate moving to Gangwon-do, I decided to enjoy the winter sport of snowboarding by getting a season pass for the first time.
강원도에서 살게 된 기념으로 겨울철 스포츠인 스노보드를 즐기기로 하고 처음으로 시즌권을 끊었습니다.

So, at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Day, my girlfriend and I set out in my car to drive to the ski resort.
그래서 새해가 되는 날, 여자 친구와 스키장으로 가기 위해 저녁 5시에 차를 타고 출발을 했습니다.
* set out in one’s car : 자차로 출발하다

But suddenly, out of nowhere, a water deer appeared on the road.
그런데 아뿔싸, 도로에 갑자기 고라니가 나타났습니다.
* out of nowhere : 난데없이, 갑자기

I instinctively slammed the brakes, but the deer froze in the headlights and ended up colliding with my car.
본능적으로 브레이크를 세게 밟았지만 고라니가 전조등 불빛에 동작을 멈추더니 제 차와 충돌하고 말았습니다.
* slam the brakes : 브레이크를 강하게 밟다, 급정거를 하다
* freeze in the headlights : 전조등 불빛에 얼어 버리다

We were in a state of shock, but we quickly gathered ourselves and reported the incident.
우리는 어안이 벙벙하였지만 얼른 정신을 차리고 사고 신고를 했습니다.
* be in a state of shock : 어안이 벙벙하다, 쇼크 상태다
* gather oneself : 정신을 차리다, 마음을 추스르다

Since it was a traffic accident on the first day of the new year, we took it as a bit of bad luck and are grateful that no one was hurt.
새해 첫날부터 일어난 교통사고여서, 액땜으로 여기에 아무도 다치지 않은 것만으로도 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.
